Screen Time in Schools: Why Classrooms Are Pulling Back (And Why That's Not the Whole Story)

In my state, a law was recently passed limiting classroom screen time for young students. I wasn't surprised. I'd been watching this coming for years.

Here's the honest, complicated truth: technology genuinely helps me. It lets me manage a large class, grade faster, and get feedback back to my students quicker than I ever could by hand. But I've also watched something else happen in the same classroom: a real decline in my students' ability to develop and articulate their own thinking.


I'm a National Board Certified Teacher and Reading Specialist with over 25 years in the classroom, and I'm still there right now, teaching full-time. I'm not looking at this from a distance.


This isn't an either/or problem, and I don't want to pretend it is. Reading researcher Maryanne Wolf calls what kids actually need a "biliterate brain," the ability to move between deep, reflective print reading and fast, skimming digital reading, and to know which mode a task calls for. Our kids need both. What most of them don't have yet is the intentionality to choose between them, and that's the part adults have to build.

Not less technology. More thinking.

The short answer is: Screen time in schools is being limited nationwide in 2026, not because technology is bad, but because teachers are seeing kids struggle to think critically without it. Several states have passed laws restricting classroom tech, and a recent teacher survey found over half say students use AI mainly as a shortcut. The real fix isn't less technology. It's teaching kids how to think, and when to reach for print versus digital, before they lean on any tool, human or AI, to think for them.

This year, with a brand-new (and much harder) Social Studies curriculum in front of my students, I've been rethinking how I teach both the higher-level reading skills and the thinking skills behind them, starting with strategic note-taking and discussion, before we ever open a device.

This isn't a story about screens being evil. It's more complicated than that, and if you're raising a child with ADHD or dyslexia, the nuance matters more for you than almost anyone.


If you've felt confused by the mixed messages, you're not imagining it. One year, schools hand every child a device and call it personalized learning. The next year, headlines say screens are the problem and states are legislating them out of classrooms. You're not failing to keep up. The ground has genuinely been shifting under everyone's feet, teachers included.


Here's what's actually happening. In 2026,several states became the first to pass laws restricting screen time in schools for young students, and more than a dozen other states introduced similar legislation the same year. Iowa and Oklahoma capped digital instruction at 60 minutes a day. Kansas went further and prohibited devices altogether in early grades. This isn't coming from one direction. Parents, teachers, and state legislators have all been raising the same concern, independently of each other.


And it's not only about screens in general. AI specifically is under its own scrutiny. A recent teacher poll found that 55% of teachers say students mostly use AI as a shortcut to avoid work, and 54% say it's making critical thinking harder to build. Los Angeles Unified, one of the largest school districts in the country, put a moratorium on AI use on school devices for this school year.

This is not a small, isolated worry. It's a wave, and it's moving fast.


Why Are States Suddenly Limiting Screen Time in Schools?


The short version: teachers who spend all day with kids are seeing the same pattern repeat, and state legislators have started responding to what's being reported out of classrooms. Devices handed to students without a clear purpose tend to become the path of least resistance. When the learning gets hard, the temptation to let a screen or a chatbot do the thinking is right there, and for a developing brain, especially one still building executive function, that temptation is hard to resist.

It's worth naming plainly: this isn't really an anti-technology movement. It's a return to asking what a tool is actually for, and when to use it. Maryanne Wolf's biliterate-brain research says the same thing in different words: the goal was never print-only or screen-only, it's knowing which mode of reading and thinking a task actually calls for. Kids are being handed powerful tools before they've been taught how to make that choice, and that's starting to show.

What Does This Have to Do With AI, Specifically?


Everything, and this is where the story gets bigger than screen time. The same concern about technology replacing thinking shows up even more sharply with AI. It's not just that kids might use AI to skip the work. It's that if a child hasn't built the habit of thinking something through for themselves, they have no way to tell when AI gets something wrong.


That's not a hypothetical. It's already happening. This year, a viral "Cat in the Hat" trend spread across TikTok, using AI-generated images and videos to make threats against schools look real. It led to lockdowns, police investigations, and criminal charges for teenagers across several states. Kids saw something frightening, generated by a tool, and reacted before anyone stopped to think it through. That's what happens when discernment hasn't been built yet. It's not a character flaw in any one kid. It's a skill gap, and it's one we can close.


So What's the Actual Fix?


Not less technology. More thinking!!

This is the heart of what I want this series to be about. The goal isn't to raise kids who avoid AI. AI is going to be part of their lives whether they work in a technical field or not. The goal is to raise kids who can think clearly enough to use it well, to recognize when something's off, to ask better questions, and to know the difference between a tool that's helping them grow and one that's just doing the growing for them.


That takes practice. It takes exactly the kind of thinking work that happens when a child wrestles with a hard paragraph, makes an inference, or has to explain why they believe something is true. It's not old-fashioned for its own sake. It's foundational.


How I Use AI Myself (And Why I'm Telling You)


Here's my own answer to "just because we can doesn't mean we should": I use AI every day to run this business, and I think that's the right call, not despite my values, because of them.


I'm a full-time classroom teacher. I don't have the budget yet to hire an editor, a researcher, or a content team. The only way these ideas get out of my head and into something you can actually use is with AI helping me move faster, not think for me. AI helps me do more with less, and honestly, do it better, because it frees up the hours I'd otherwise spend on mechanics to spend instead on getting the thinking right.


But here's the part I won't skip: it requires my expertise to work. I catch AI's mistakes because I know the research, the classroom reality, and my own kids well enough to know when something's off. And even then, I don't always catch it. I'm human. I get things wrong sometimes too.


That's not a confession, it's the whole point. This is a learning curve for all of us, parents, educators, adults in general, and the way we get better at it is the same way we're going to teach our kids: by being intentional, by staying humble about our mistakes, and by deciding on purpose what our own practices are going to be. If you're raising a child with ADHD or dyslexia, this conversation isn't as simple as "less screen time is better," and I want to be honest about that up front. Executive function, the mental skills involved in planning, focusing, and thinking something through, is one of the areas ADHD affects most directly. And for many kids with dyslexia, the right kind of technology, like text-to-speech, isn't a shortcut. It's the accommodation that makes the content reachable in the first place. This series is going to spend real time on that distinction, because it matters, and because most conversations about "kids and screens" leave your child out of the picture entirely. I'm not going to do that here.
